Many times, CO2 cleaning products are compared to Dust Off aerosol products. Although the two are often used for similar applications, they are two different cleaning devices.

Aerosol cans containing ‘chlorinated’ liquid chemicals can easily ignite and have been linked to many studies by the EPA and OSHA concerning their harmful emissions. Dust Off style aerosol dusters are also abused by inhalation and as such, have been banned by many large corporations. Aerosol cans are low pressure containers and most liquid formulations in those cans are at an average pressure of less than 80 psi. We know of fan motors in electronics destroyed by the aerosols because the ‘liquid’ sprayed into the bearings. Liquid aerosol is a solvent and as such, removes all of the lubrication. We do not bash aerosol cleaning, it is quite effective for ‘blindly dusting’ large surface areas with a low pressure stream. I suspect the big chemical company, DOW, is not commenting on the ozone depletion caused by aerosols.

CO2 has evolved in the last 10 years. Not the gas itself, but rather the way it is dispensed. Our ProSeries CO2 spray valve is designed to attack and eliminate particulate concontamination through a precision tip machined to 0.013 inches. The pressure delivered at the tip of our device is well over 500 psi and can be as much as 850 psi at warmer temperatures. We have learned a lot from all of the copier repair people and photographers using our CO2 product in those 10 years. Simply, we had to make a bullet proof dispensing valve, with a removable nozzle and a trigger lock to prevent discharge when tossed into the tech’s bag.

Because CO2 is so powerful, we can pack it into a small cylinder, 1.5” diameter x 5.2” long. But that size of cylinder has a lot to do with transportation by ground service in the USA. Because the cylinder is that small size, it can be ground shipped as a ‘Consumer Commodity’ with an ORD-D label and not incur ‘haz-mat’ fees by the freight carrier. That is huge.
ProSeries CO2 Cleaning kit is a ProSeries Valve, set of two nozzles, a molded rubber base, and one 74 gram CO2 cylinder. In our lab, we consistently achieve an average of 500 ‘bursts’ of CO2 cleaning energy. We push down on the ‘feather touch’ valve button part way and still spot clean effectively. Since the output pressure is quite strong, very little gas is needed to do the job. This device is a tool that professionals can appreciate; it is not a wimpy aerosol duster.

Currently the Leland CO2 PowerClean™ ProSeries has an end user cost of $89.95 and replacement 74g cylinders are $9.95 each.
