Disposable GAS Cylinders - Disposal Methods

Affected items: All steel and brass/copper/non magnetic disposable gas filled cylinders, puncturable type, non refillable.

This reference document suggests to all end users the proper disposal methods for all gas filled products supplied by Leland Limited, Inc. (CAGE: 2W134).

  1. Identification: 99% of all gas filled cylinders are marked with some indication as to the gas content.
    Example:"16 grams CO2 filled."
If not marked with the gas content, then a specification is marked.
Example: "MIL-C-52053." It is advisable to keep a record of disposal for future reference. Having the identity of the cylinder is essential for record keeping.
  2. Determine if gas is present in the cylinder: WARNING: Filled gas cylinders may be dangerous if not handled properly. Do not heat cylinders above 120F.
    1. All puncturable type disposable cylinders are presumed to be fully charged unless the small puncturable end (opposite of the rounded bottom) is clearly punctured.
    2. The cylinder is weighed using a scale capable of reading in grams accurate to 0.1g; the weight of the cylinder shall be less than the indicated weight imprinted on the side of the cartridge by the amount of the indicated charge.
  3. Releasing the gas (emptying if needed): Non flammable gases may be released in the atmosphere in small quantities. Fix the cylinder(s) in a steel jaw vice and using a sharp metal object, like an awl or punch, rest it on the puncture surface in the middle and strike it with a quick blow from a hammer.
CAUTION: The cylinder may contain as much as 3,000 psi. EYE PROTECTION MUST BE WORN. Expect the puncture device to rapidly come away from the cylinder.
  4. Recycling and Disposal: All of the steel cylinders are produced from a low carbon (14) steel product. Once empty, no residue remains. Cross cutting or sectioning is not required.
    1. Place with normal refuse.
    2. Place with steel recycling.
